Presentation of the Mykhailo Drahomanov Digital Archive Concept at the University of Lausanne
On November 6, 2025, project members Oksana Yurkova and Svitlana Blashchuk presented the concept of the Mykhailo Drahomanov Digital Archive during an international academic event in Lausanne.
The presentation took place during the conference “War at Europe’s Doorstep: Geopolitical, Economic, and Social Implications of the Russian-Ukrainian War” at the University of Lausanne. Speaking on behalf of the team, Oksana Yurkova emphasized that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has made the preservation and accessibility of Ukraine’s historical heritage more relevant than ever. Digital projects are becoming one of the ways to spread Ukrainian history and promote Ukrainian intellectual ideas and products.
The technical architecture of the digital resource and its capabilities were explained. Wanting to place Drahomanov and his works in a broader European context, the team chose Koha, a free, open-source, integrated library system that is widely recognized internationally. Koha provides transparency, independence, and flexibility, as well as the ability to work with data in an interface familiar to most researchers. This choice required additional training and customization to meet the needs of the Digital Archive.
The Digital Archive, currently in test mode, is bilingual (Ukrainian and English) and features:
- Project information and a “Quote of the Day” section
- A classification system for archival documents and bibliographic records
- Access to Drahomanov’s works via clickable book covers
- Pdf-files with digitized and recognized texts that are easy and convenient to work with
Future plans include adding interactive infographics to visualize Drahomanov’s intellectual network.
